FOR OUR CHILDREN
Saskatoon Tribal Council, together with its member First Nations communities, have formed an Education Alliance that will provide an education system that reflects the needs and aspirations of our First Nations children and youth. Through this education system, our goal is to improve the quality of life of our member First Nations children, youth and families.
Saskatoon Tribal Council Educational Alliance
The Education Alliance is a rare opportunity for Saskatoon Tribal Council and member First Nations to explore and re-imagine how schools are organized, managed, governed and operated.
Creating a new school board has given us the opportunity to reflect on the history between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. We have looked back at what needs to change, and have looked ahead at what we want to become.
An independent school system helps us make that change. Through the Education Alliance, we are actively advocating for our children’s future, our culture, language, and Indigeneity.
In March 2016, the Saskatoon Tribal Council’s Board of Directors passed a resolution to pursue an education alliance between seven of the eight First Nations signatories in Treaties Four and Six. With this guidance and direction, the Education Alliance is developing a school board that is both independent and cooperative, and that actively consults with our communities. We have been very busy, building the infrastructure, funding, and jurisdiction that is the backbone of any new system. We are guided by the principles that:
- Whatever we do must enhance community capacity to deliver a quality education, and
- Implementation must be achieved through grassroots, consensual and incremental stages.
In September 2019, we will welcome the first students into our new school system. There are still many decisions to make and much work to do. But we are inspired by the conviction that building strength, pride, and resiliency in our communities begins with our children.
