Provincial Government
The province must operate in a legal manner consistent with a recognition of Indigenous rights, including rights that:
- Are inherent
- Stem from Treaties
- Are constitutionally entrenched, and
- Are endorsed by international bodies such as the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
The province must also behave in a manner that upholds the honour of the Crown. Given the mandate of publicly-funded education to advance social good, including the promotion of social cohesion, the province must also take a lead role in public policy initiatives such as Reconciliation as put forward by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, especially those relating specifically to education.
The province is ultimately responsible for adhering to the Saskatchewan Education Act (The Education Act, 1995). This includes partnership agreements between the Ministry and various school boards.
The Education Alliance and member First Nations recognize the importance and benefit of working with local schools and therefore wish to establish the appropriate structures, processes, and relationships conducive to the wellbeing and achievement of Indigenous students in provincial schools.
