Roles & Leadership
There are many partners involved in creating a responsive school system serving students in member First Nations communities.
The Saskatoon Tribal Council initiated and has to lead the development of the Education Alliance.
Governance House oversees all corporate functions of the Saskatoon Tribal Council, including education. It is accountable to the Saskatoon Tribal Council, which in turn, is accountable to its seven member nations.
Governance House appoints board members to the Education Alliance. The Alliance works closely with communities to bring the school system into existence.
Six of the STC’s seven-member nations are participating in the Education Alliance: Kinistin Saulteaux Nation, Mistawasis Nêhiyawak, Muskeg Lake Cree Nation Muskoday First Nation, One Arrow First Nation and Yellow Quill First Nation. Whitecap Dakota First Nation currently has an education agreement with Saskatoon Public Schools.
Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Education sets province-wide standards for all provincial schools and boards. The Education Alliance will continue to follow the provincial curricula with enhanced local education programming.
Provincial school boards have a shared responsibility to ensure education is accessible and equitable for all students as they transition to First Nation education systems.
Each school has the autonomy to provide opportunities for parents and students to participate in their school’s development and operations.
