Note: Whitecap Dakota First Nation has an education agreement with Saskatoon Public Schools.
In 2015, the Saskatoon Tribal Council Board of Directors passed a motion approving an education governance concept framework. In March 2016, following strong direction from the member communities, the STC passed Resolution 2015/2016-01 to work with communities to develop a First Nation’s education system.
Following three years of committee meetings, consultation, community meetings, technical tables and presentations, the STC and communities created the draft Education Strategic Framework. The Framework is the basis for negotiating a Regional Education Agreement.
From the beginning, the goal has been to bring to life the spirit and intent envisioned by the First Nations signatories in the negotiation of Treaty Four and Treaty Six. Specifically, the STC Board of Directors wanted to address three key historical inequities in education: infrastructure, funding and jurisdiction.
In xxx, six of seven member communities signed the Education Political Accord, which outlines founding principles around self-government, educational priorities and the governance relationships going forward.
